This sculpture was produced to show the beautiful hydrodynamic shape and aggressive look of the Humboldt squid. As one of the top predators in the worlds oceans, to me, the squid is an amazing piece of design and engineering. This sculpture is detailed using parts from modern F1 Grand Prix cars as listed below and is limited to twenty four pieces plus two artists proofs. Body: Carbon fibre, 1 ply / layer 2 x 2 twill 200 gsm material, 2 ply/ layers 2 x 2 twill 400 gsm material gives 1.5 mm total thickness with UV resistant tinted clear coat. Mid section: CAD designed, 3D printed ABS tentacle hub and eye socket produced on a Stratasys Fortus 400 engineering grade FDM printer, coated yellow. Tentacles: Each made from 1 ply / layers of 2 x 2 twill 200 gsm, 2 ply / layers 2 x 2 twill 400 gsm carbon fibre with graduated spring loaded washers as suckers. The tentacle end tips are modified front wing flap adjusters from the Sahara Force India team, part no. J37-0024. Eyes: Machined HE 30 aluminium with modified radiator hose flange from the Sahara Force India F1 team, part no J21-0045. Beak: 3D printed top and bottom with – 6 titanium fittings. Intake ring: Machined HE 30 aluminium. Jet vent: Stainless steel turbo vent pipe, reshaped to suit. Mounting methods: Carbon wave base, matt clear coated with three machined and joined engine mounting studs from the Honda F1 team, part no 080-A1–012-01 Dimensions: L 1500 mm W 400 mm H 160 mm on base.
